Thursday, June 14, 2018 - Day 5 of our trip. Margaret had circled "Classic Tea Time" at 3:00 for an event we might consider attending but we never made it. The evening's dress was "Gala Attire" but the Eurodam is a slightly less formal ship so I dressed in a sports jacket, tie and slacks, while Margaret wore black slacks, black blouse and sequened coverlet. Our evening meal was in the Dining room with table companions.
We arrived in Ketchikan at around 7:00 am and departed around 12:30 that afternoon, so the entire morning was devoted to our excursion.
Some brief information about Ketchikan. It is the 8th largest city(?) in Alaska with a population of less than 10,000. It's major industries are fishing and tourism. It has the nickname of the "Rain Capital of Alaska". Winters are cool but far milder than you might think with the January average being around 34 °F. Summers are mild, August’s high averages around 65 °F. We all know about Austin's summers, I wonder what the average January temp is in Austin. Might have to conside moving to Ketchikan.
Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour
This was definitely our favorite excursion. The walk from the ship was a little long but well worth it. The excursion was held on a converted crab fishing ship, the Aleutian Ballad, which was featured in the second and third seasons of the Deadliest Catch. The brief YouTube video at the bottom of this page was actual film of a rogue wave that almost capsized the vessel. The ship was later converted so it could be used as an excursion vessel.
The staff were both entertaining and informative, with tons of smiles and laughs during our outing. We not only saw crabs, and prawns we were lucky enough to see bald eagles and whales and even an octopus. There was plenty of show and tell and touch during the tour.
